Young Teenage Elephant Worked To Death For Tourist Rides
An elephant being forced to work non-stop grueling shifts giving rides to tourists has tragically passed away from exhaustion in Sri Lanka. The 18 year old pachyderm named Kanakota took her last breath at very popular tourist town Sigiriya.
Enraged animal rights activists describe Kanakota’s ordeal of having to give non-stop back to back rides in the blistering heat Sri Lanka is known for. She collapsed no longer able to continue pushing her body through the abusive circumstances.
Kanakota carried a large heavy platform on her back with her legs kept shackled making things even more difficult. A bull hook was repeatedly seen in use to keep her moving where her abusers wanted her to be.
This following picture of her is of the last ride Kanakota ever gave.
Animal activist group Moving Animals who witnessed this entire event had activist Paul Healey release this statement:
“This young elephant’s tragic and cruel death was entirely preventable…. Until tourists refuse to ride elephants, more of these gentle giants will continue to suffer and collapse from exhaustion. Sri Lankan activists and animal lovers have been campaigning tirelessly to enact this animal welfare bill that will finally change the laws and offer animals the protection they so desperately need. We urge tourists to never ride an elephant, and call on the Sri Lankan government to instate a new animal welfare bill that will finally offer protection to the country’s amazing array of animals and wildlife.”
Elephants can live for 60 years or more out in the wild so her death at just 18 years old is an incredible tragedy that happened only because of greed and those who live in ignorance.
