Joaquin Phoenix has been named as PETA’s person of the year. He joins a long list of high profile winners and celebrities including Oprah, Pope Francis, Eva Mendes, Alicia Silverstone and many others who have worked with PETA to spread awareness about animal cruelty.
Phoenix’s “Joker” movie hit big this year and he was using that clout to spread an animal rights message both at premiers and while appearing at the Farmer Johns vigil in Los Angeles.
Unlike so many “Vegan” celebrities Joaquin actual is a vegan and animal rights activist who has been vegan since he was 3 years old. He cradled the lifeless body of a chicken at a memorial service he led at the National Animal Rights Day march this year, has been outspoken in many campaigns through PETA and others about wearing, eating, or exporting animals in anyway and has taken every opportunity to speak out for the animals.
He recently executive produced a new animal rights documentary called “The Animal People” that shows the government and corporate collusions we in the movement run up against in our fight to create a vegan world. The trailer for this new movie looks incredible and will be available to rent or own on December 10th.
“Joaquin Phoenix never misses an opportunity to turn the spotlight away from himself and onto animals’ plight and to set a great example of walking the vegan walk,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement.
That is exactly why we will always praise him and never wonder if he is “really” vegan because he has more than proven himself to be one of us and a voice for the voiceless.
