Glad Now Has Vegan Plant Based Ziploc Bags

The new “Sustaine” bags made by Glad are 100% made from plants through a process they have yet to unveil but is likely very similar to other plant-based plastics on the market at the moment.

“We craft plant-based food storage products so your food is more enjoyable & special. Join us in reducing waste while celebrating your kitchen favorites.” Claims the website

The bags claim to provide “fresher and healthier” food storage that’s better for the environment than the traditional plastic bags we’re all used to. Since they will breakdown like other organic materials they won’t be found in the great Pacific garbage patch or at the bottom of the ocean.

These new bags should also be safer for wildlife like whales and dolphins who often ingest plastic bags when they mistake them for jellyfish which appear very similar when floating in the ocean. Whales and dolphins have both been found beached in multiple cases with stomachs overflowing with plastic bags likely causing the animals to beach themselves in the first place.

With an estimated 10.5 million tons of plastic ending up in the ocean per year, it’s easy to see how a product like this with mass consumer adoption from a large company like Glad would make a big ecological impact.

Coca-Cola is one of the largest plastic bottle polluters in the world so let’s cross our fingers that they will adopt this technology soon. As plant-based plastics become cheaper and easier to produce let’s hope many more companies begin adopting it.

As time goes on and technology continues to advance we will find more and more compostable and environmentally friendly new plastics like this.
