Kevin Smith Brings Vegan Mooby Meals Nationwide

Spread the love

Mooby’s is now a reality! From the silver screen, it has leaped from a Los Angeles pop-up restaurant to your own kitchen.

Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) is seen posing in character showing off the vegan Mooby’s creations that look absolutely delicious.

Director Kevin Smith in character as Silent Bob eyes up a Mooby’s burger.

While the Los Angeles pop-up restaurant had the famous cow tipper (3 stacked beyond burgers although in the movies it was many more) it also had the Mooby’s “Hater Totz” and lasagna sandwiches.

The fictitious Mooby’s restaurant from the view askew universe had its first appearance in Smith’s film “Dogma” that premiered in 1999 and starred Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, George Carlin, Janeane Garofolo, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Salma Hayek, Alanis Morissette, Jason Mewes and Smith himself as the eponymous Silent Bob.

Mooby’s has also appeared in “Clerks II”, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (which also stars Mark Hamill), and the newest movie set in Director Kevin Smith’s universe; “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot”.

The Mooby’s pop-up was launched for online delivery back in April during the peak of the CV crisis and the demand was still so off the charts that they managed to crash the Postmates delivery app not once but twice!

On the first day, the Mooby’s pop-up crew were slammed with over 3,000 orders making it so the could only fill a small fraction of those orders.

They quickly got up to speed fulfilling the avalanche of orders and raising large amounts of money for charity while doing so.

The pop-ups initial launch donated proceeds to “No Us Without You” who’s mission is to feed undocumented workers in hospitality during the CV crisis.

After that, the first week of proceeds were given to “Clean Up South Central” which in the aftermath of Black Lives Matter protests across Los Angeles is working to clean up the mess and vandalism.

“We wanted to help out however we could,” Smith said.

In the center of the hustle and bustle of West Hollywood (WEHO) the temporary restaurant began seating customers in the restaurant itself on June 18th after weeks of delivery only service.

The Mooby’s pop-up is the brainchild of Derek Berry who has brought other fictional restaurants into reality including a pop-up for “Los Pollos Hermanos” (back in 2019) the restaurant from cable TV series “Breaking Bad”.

You had to get tickets that cost $30 dollars each just to get into Mooby’s but the lucky few who got the chance received an immersive view askew universe tour around many of Kevin Smith’s most legendary film props like the “I Assure You We’re Open” sign from the original clerks written in shoe polish thanks to vandals jamming gum in the window shutter locks.

You can see Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes, and Kevin Smith posing in front of the “I Assure You We Are Open” sign used in the original “Clerks” in Smith’s Instagram post bellow.

“You never go mask to mouth!” BECKY returned to her old job when @rosariodawson dropped her mask for a quick pic during our opening night live stream at @moobyspopup! So @jaymewes and I asked our pal @albertlortega to snap pics of us with our @jayandsilentbob Reboot and Clerks II (and future Clerks III) costar in front of the facade that @clarebk and @legionmofficial made of @quickstopgroceries! @heyitsderekberry and his crew are killing it so far: the first week of reservations for Mooby’s is already SOLD OUT, so if you want to book for Week 2 on, go to Mooby’s Pop-Up Dot Com now! Or the original Mooby’s menu from “Dogma” complete with the absurd “Cowtipper” burger; the four stacked patty burger monstrosity that is a humorous lambasting of the products fast food companies are always trying to top each other within the real world.

You could however get a triple “Cowtipper” at the pop-up beside the “Egga Mooby Muffin” built with Beyond Meat’s Beyond Sausage and JUST’s Vegan Egg or the previously mentioned lasagna sandwich.

All meals came with a side of “Onion Rings To Rule Them All” or the “Hater Totz” which Kevin Smith said were his favorite menu item.

Ever since I first introduced the fictional fast food joint in my films, folks have said “You suck at movies, so open a Mooby's!” Now the folks who did @savedbythemax is building the @moobyspopup – an IRL eatery in Los Angeles that opens later this year, pandemic depending! But as a preview of what’s to come, a Mooby Meal will be available for delivery in L.A. via @postmates starting THIS SUNDAY and running til 4/25! Our takeout Mooby Meals include "Mooby's Messy Lasagna Sandwich" with a side of "Hater Totz" and "Chocolate Covered Pretzels" for dessert! And for your “toy surprise”, we include an autographed Reboot card from me, that will also entitle the bearer to front row slots when the pop-up is finally open to the public! And we’re donating the proceeds to @nouswithoutyou (providing meals to families in need effected by Covid 19). If you’ve ever seen #dogma, or #jayandsilentbobstrikeback, or #clerks2, or #jayandsilentbobreboot, you’ve seen fake people eat at a fake fast food joint! Now, BE a fake person eating actual food from a real restaurant! Many thanks to @heyitsderekberry and the #savedbythemax folks for making a dopey dream come true! Follow @moobyspopup and on the high holiday of 4/20, live the Mooby’s slogan “I’m Eating It!” (Mooby Meals will be prepared by Chef @royce_burke and the @secret_lasagna team. Limited amounts daily, all of which will be offered first come, first serve. Hours 12pm-8pm. Follow @MoobysPopUp for more info!)

Credit also needs to go to the chef behind “Secret Lasagna” Chef Royce Burke was the man behind the development of the vegan Mooby’s menu.

Now with the pop-up closed, Derek Berry pitched another idea to Smith that would involve teaming up with digital food marketplace GoldBelly to deliver Mooby’s meal kits to fans throughout the continental United States.

Smith was elated at the idea saying in an interview:

“Derek, who created the Mooby’s Pop Up, had a great idea, and he teamed up the good folks at GoldBelly to be able to provide movie meals everywhere, That means if you’re in New Jersey and you want to order a Mooby’s meal, you can do it.”

After being closed for 3 months for covid and trying to pivot in every way, not sure if we were going to make it, I’m here today to say we are finally announcing our opening of our next pop up, Moobys! 1. We will be using our platform to make sure we do this right. First, we are going to partner with and donate the first week of business proceeds to Clean Up South Central. A non profit, cleaning up south central areas after protests and that just need that need love. 2. We will be pre selling pick up times, guests can come get their meals, take the photos and moments they’ve come to love from our pop ups, and then either eat on our patio socially distancing or take it to home, but we will be foregoing dine in. We think it’s time to get back to our business, but with a newer, safer model for now.

The Mooby meal kits that are now available on GoldenBelly at $79 dollars each and contain enough delicious vegan food to feed six people or a couple of very hungry vegans.

Each kit features six Beyond Burger-based vegan “Cowtipper” burgers, multiple sides of vegan chocolate-drenched pretzels, four Mooby’s branded cups, a Kevin Smith download card, four pretzel bags, and a special Mooby’s Meal gift.

Smith famously went vegan / plant-based back in 2018 at the age of 47 after surviving a nearly fatal heart attack often referred to as a “widow-maker” due to the low probability of survival.

I was trying to do a killer standup special this evening but I might’ve gone too far. After the first show, I felt kinda nauseous. I threw up a little but it didn’t seem to help. Then I started sweating buckets and my chest felt heavy. Turns out I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life at the #glendale hospital told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (also known as “the Widow-Maker” because when it goes, you’re a goner). If I hadn’t canceled the second show to go to the hospital, the Doc said I would’ve died tonight. For now, I’m still above ground! But this is what I learned about myself during this crisis: death was always the thing I was most terrified of in life. When the time came, I never imagined I’d ever be able to die with dignity – I assumed I’d die screaming, like my Dad (who lost his life to a massive heart attack). But even as they cut into my groin to slip a stent into the lethal Widow-Maker, I was filled with a sense of calm. I’ve had a great life: loved by parents who raised me to become the individual I am. I’ve had a weird, wonderful career in all sorts of media, amazing friends, the best wife in the world and an incredible daughter who made me a Dad. But as I stared into the infinite, I realized I was relatively content. Yes, I’d miss life as it moved on without me – and I was bummed we weren’t gonna get to make #jayandsilentbobreboot before I shuffled loose the mortal coil. But generally speaking, I was okay with the end, if this was gonna be it. I’ve gotten to do so many cool things and I’ve had so many adventures – how could I be shitty about finally paying the tab. But the good folks at the Glendale hospital had other plans and the expertise to mend me. Total strangers saved my life tonight (as well as my friends @jordanmonsanto & @iamemilydawn, who called the ambulance). This is all a part of my mythology now and I’m sure I’ll be facing some lifestyle changes (maybe it’s time to go Vegan). But the point of this post is to tell you that I faced my greatest fear tonight… and it wasn’t as bad as I’ve always imagined it’d be. I don’t want my life to end but if it ends, I can’t complain. It was such a gift. #KevinSmith

His vegan and animal rights supporting daughter Harley Quinn Smith (named after the DC Comics villain The Joker’s sidekick) helped him go vegan and even posed with him in the famous Doomies vegan restaurant in Los Angeles as he began his new journey.

While Mooby’s in his films is not vegan it was important to Smith that the pop-up and in turn the new meal kits had vegan options reflecting his vegan journey and newfound lifestyle.

Smith who is clearly thinner now than before his heart attack is much healthier in both body and mind.

His transition and journey show what a plant-based diet can do for someone who previously treated their body as if it didn’t matter.

His heart is physically healthier but also spiritually healthier both for himself and for the animals as he’s said in an exclusive Mercy For Animals interview

“It’s good for the animals. It’s good for the planet. It’s true. But it’s also good for you. Going vegan will save your life.” Smith told Mercy For Animals in an interview you can watch below.

He and daughter Harley have also worked with Gene Baur’s Farm Sanctuary to get people to adopt a turkey at one of their sanctuaries for thanksgiving in 2019 as well as starting a vegan podcast called “Vegan Abattoir” where Kevin Smith said about the duo:

“The Kid and I intend to slaughter misinformation and butcher bullsh*t about being vegan” said Smith

Now excuse me while I go and order the vegan Mooby meal kit so that I can both enjoy it and review it for you all on the Vegan News Instagram Here. Plus let’s be real, I want those Mooby’s cups in my life.
