IKEA is celebrating 40 years of offering its famous Swedish meatballs by adding a new vegan “meatball” to their menu.

The new falafel will debut in early 2026 and will contain onions, zucchini, chickpeas, and spices. Described as tender inside and crispy outside it will be served with an aioli dipping sauce, couscous and a slice of lemon.

For the last ten years IKEA has added menu items for vegan and plant based patrons that include; hot dogs, meatballs, ice cream, and chocolate mousse.

“Following the many different meatball variations introduced over the years, once we started testing recipes, we felt the falafel would be the perfect addition to the menu,” Daniel Yngvesson, Global Food Designer at IKEA, said in the press release. “The falafel has become a staple in Swedish food culture over the years, and the aromatic and nutty flavor is a beloved favorite all over the world. It’s also an exciting new flavor profile for IKEA.”

The company hopes the new falafel will help customers in making healthier and more environmentally sustainable food choices.
