Celebrity Rooney Mara known for her work on films like “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and being engaged to fellow vegan animal rights activist Joaquin Phoenix has collaborated with Animal Equality to expose the animal cruelty happening in two factory farms.
They created an 8 minute mini documentary showing thousands of cramped and deformed chickens. Illness, injury, and death are all around in the filth covered conditions these poor birds live and often die in.
The second farm saw sows crammed into barbaric gestation crates still in use in modern farms no matter how big or small. Incapable of even standing or turning around they can’t clean or properly nurse their newborn piglets. Many mother pigs end up crushing the piglets, the very thing the animal ag industry claims in its defense of these gestation crates.
“Nothing prepares you for looking into the eyes of a mother pig whose life is to be impregnated and left in a cage until she’s slaughtered,” Mara said. “I kept thinking about my sister who just had a baby, and how beautiful that instant desire to nurture and protect your child is. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to be literally trapped and crushing your own babies and not be able to do anything about it.”
The chicken farm according to the farms records houses 50,000 chickens while losing an average of 42 souls a day. The pig farm had around 3,000 with no other statistics available.
“Animal Equality’s undercover investigators face great personal risk to expose what the meat industry doesn’t want you to see, and what the public has every right to know,” Animal Equality President Sharon Núñez said. “We are deeply grateful to Rooney for bravely looking into the eyes of these animals, and joining us in our promise to them to share their cries with anyone who will listen. Her courage is truly inspiring.”
Mara is using her celebrity much like her fiancé Joaquin Phoenix to shine a spotlight on animal cruelty and the horrific conditions these animals must go through to get to your plate. Over the summer they both led the 9th National Animal Rights Day in California while carrying the lifeless victims of this ongoing atrocity.
