Hollywoods vegan power couple Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have gone from girlfriend and boyfriend to fiancés sometime earlier this year.
Both vegan and both animal rights activists who have spoken out and protested side by side they first met on the set of the Spike Jonze sci-fi masterpiece “Her” back in 2013.
When they met up again in 2016 to begin filming the biblical drama “Mary Magdalene” that stars Phoenix as Jesus Christ and Mara playing the title role of Mary Magdalene, sparks flew and they began dating.
In the past month or two rumors have been kicking around Hollywood publications that the two stars had become engaged. This was further perpetuated and now solidified as truth when Rooney Mara was seen around town with a massive diamond engagement ring on her left hand.
“‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ actress was spotted two months ago wearing a gigantic diamond ring in full view on her left hand when she ran around the streets of Los Angeles doing errands and carrying a ‘Go Vegan’ bag,” reported the International Business Times.
They both are outspoken voices for the voiceless using their fame whenever possible to speak out and educate the public about the plight of animals. From marching repeatedly together in animal rights events to participating in undercover investigations like Rooney did late last year they practice what they preach and set an example we should all follow.
When they marched side by side through West Hollywood leading a funeral procession last year in Los Angeles they solidified their place together in our movement.
Joaquin has been vegan for more than 40 years and when speaking with Collider he said that his commitment to not harming animals ever again occurred when on a family fishing trip saying:
“They were catching fish, and I guess to stun them they were throwing them against the side of the boat,” he recalled. “I just had a profound strong reaction. It felt like a real injustice. It wasn’t just me, it was my siblings, all of my siblings, except for the youngest, Summer, she wasn’t born. I don’t know how to explain it. I think it made me distrustful, and angry and frightened of humans, humanity.”
Mara also comes from a sensitive family who live their values including her sister Kate who in a recent interview with Animal Equality said that her decision to no longer harm animals was a “no brainer.”
Kate like Rooney is working to get the suffering and exploitation of animals out of the fashion industry. Mara owns a vegan clothing line called “HIRAETH” that explains itself on the website as:
“HIRAETH is a women’s ready-to-wear and accessories label founded by Rooney Mara with partners Sara Schloat and Chrys Wong. The brand was created to serve a new generation of conscious women who value quality and design but do not want to compromise on their ethical beliefs.”
“All of HIRAETH’s items are leather, fur, wool, and silk-free. With alternative fabrics sourced from mills in Italy, France, Japan, and the UK, each piece is carefully crafted in downtown Los Angeles.”
“HIRAETH is designed for forward-thinking creatives who agree that in our impersonal, disconnected age, the values of craftsmanship, quality, comfort, and respect for all living creatures are more essential than ever.”
Mara says the line was created after she couldn’t easily find clothing that was compassionate to both non-human animals and humans too.
“In fast fashion, you can find faux-leather boots that are really cheap, but while it’s cruelty-free in the animal sense, I didn’t necessarily know where those things were made, or if they were cruel towards humans,” she said in a Vogue interview in 2019.
HIRAETH is a Welsh word that cannot be completely translated into English. It’s a concept, a feeling that means longing for home or longing for what is missing. That couldn’t be more apt because as vegans we long for our vegan home, our vegan world, Mara gets that.
There has been no wedding date set or announced but we will keep you updated as always right here on Vegan News.
Congratulations to Rooney and Joaquin! We look forward to a new year of your activism both together and separately!
