Trader Joe’s says they are currently developing a new and very creamy plant-based vegan milk chocolate bar that will soon be available in stores.
The grocery store chain broke the news during their latest episode of their Inside Trader Joe’s podcast. During the episode, they had a conversation with the grocery chain’s marketing director Tara Miller and Alison Nadler Guerette the category manager for cereal, cookies, and candy at Trader Joe’s.
“Our customers are asking for vegan items. Or for instance, we launched almond butter cups this past year. Almond butter was very popular in the grocery category, but we have peanut butter cups so why not almond butter cups,” Nadler Guerette said.
“That makes me think of a product that’s still sort of in development but has been approved by the tasting panel,” Miller added.
The new plant-based vegan chocolate bars are being formulated with an “almond beverage” as its base so that it can give the creamy taste and mouthfeel consumers are used to from the animal-derived versions. They are working to make it indistinguishable from the non-vegan versions.
“But I wouldn’t have known the difference if I hadn’t been told,” Miller said. “It just tasted like really good creamy milk chocolate. And I feel like our vegan customers are going to absolutely flip for that particular bar.”
While the two Trader Joe’s employees didn’t share any more details about the new plant-based vegan milk chocolate bar we can surmise from Trader Joe’s track record of constantly increasing their vegan food options that this will be a product line that will expand quickly.
That increase in plant-based vegan products has included most recently their Plant-Based Protein Patties meant to compete with other similar burgers like the Beyond Burger from Beyond Meat or the new Gardein Ultimate Burger.
There’s sure to be many more vegan plant-based products to come at Trader Joe’s in 2020 with Veganuary hitting a record-breaking 400,000 plus people this year.
