Vegan and animal rights activist “Joker” star Joaquin Phoenix gave a moving and emotional speech both on stage and backstage after winning his Golden Globe award.
“First I’d like to thank the Hollywood foreign press for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change.”
“It’s a very bold move making tonight plant-based and it really sends a powerful message.”
He tried to say something about his partner and fellow vegan animal rights activist Rooney Mara but teared up when he said her name and had to move on.
“Contrary to popular belief I don’t wanna rock the boat but the boat is f***ing rocked. It’s really nice that so many people have come up and sent their well wishes to Australia but we have to do more than that…then such a beautiful gesture.”
Together hopefully we can be unified and actually make some changes. It’s great to vote but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives. I hope that we can do that. We don’t have to take private jets to palm springs for the awards (music begins playing loudly in the middle of his speech to usher him off the stage) or back, please!
Backstage Joaquin answered press questions and asked a few of his own. One unidentified journalist asked him about the food and what it meant to him.
“Speaking of the food, how was the food inside and what did it mean to you that they went vegan for tonight?” asked the journalist
“This was the first time I’ve ever eaten the food at this ceremony…I thought it was excellent. I was so moved by the decision to make tonight plant-based. That’s such an important step. The SAG awards, the creator’s choice awards, the governor’s ball and whatever else there is, needs to do it as well. That is a very important statement.
Animal agriculture is the third leading cause of climate change (It’s actually number 1), it uses the 70% of the water, it pollutes the most water, the statistics are staggering and I think we’re coming to a point now where the evidence is irrefutable and undeniable.
I think it’s somewhat like when we realized how poisonous tobacco was and second-hand smoking they made it illegal to smoke in public places. I think now consuming animal products is no longer just a personal choice it is having a drastic and vast consequence on the rest of the world and all of us.
So I think that it was incredibly brave and compassionate of HFPA to make that bold decision. I really commend them for that…I’ve never been so proud to attend an award ceremony as I am tonight.”
